About Us
What is Parent Voices New York?
We are public school parents determined to make our voices heard in the debates around our children’s education. We are a grass-roots democratic organization, committed to bringing together diverse parents, taking action together and using our power as citizens and voters to influence policy around public education.
We initially came together out of a shared sense of outrage about the new NY state “APPR” system (passed in mid-March) which ties teacher evaluations almost exclusively to the unreliable and inaccurate statistical measurements of high-stakes tests. Nowhere in the world has this kind of assessment and evaluation been shown to improve school performance. And in the meantime, it has an incredibly destructive effect on educational practices, meaning more and more teaching to the test, more time and money spent on testing rather than education, and more pointless stress for our children. We want a fair and effective way to measure teachers which does not harm children along the way.
We are all real New York state public school parents. We have no staff or budget. The forces behind this insane emphasis on high-stakes testing have millions of dollars behind their efforts. What we have is the truth and the knowledge that if we don’t fight for our children, no one will.
As bad as things are now, they are set to get much worse, and it is time parents speak up before it is too late.
Right now we have representatives from the following schools in our group. If you don’t see your school, let us know at [email protected], and you can start a team at your school. If you want to join up with the team already in place at your school, contact us and we will put you in touch!
